Lalaloopsy Silly Hair "Jewel Sparkles"

It's been a while since I've done a review. I guess I've been anxious over my birthday coming up on Tuesday :3 Here's hoping for new Lalaloopsy or Kawaii Crush merchandise. In fact, if I get any I will be doing a review as I open it. How exciting is that?!

Okay so maybe it isn't that exciting but I have no life, so to me it is. Enjoy the review~!

Fit for a a princess!

Today we will be observing the first special themed Lalaloopsy doll to hit market sometime after their release. I assume these were made to appeal to anyone who had wished for Lalaloopsy's to have some sort of hair to play with. As I got into Lalaloopsy a little late, I got mine about the price of a normal doll, if not a few dollars more. While a new line of hair dolls has come out, there are still new Silly Hair dolls being released on occasion.

A Silly Hair Lalaloopsy is a doll that acts like an average Lalaloopsy doll. However, as the name would imply they have a "silly hair" feature. The hair is not of a soft material, but of coils of thin, hollow plastic. Each doll comes with a curling brush, as well as a few accessories specific to each character. They also wear outfits vaguely modified from their normal outfit, and come with a pet.

While Jewel and Crumbs had been the original two, many have followed since!

Don't I look cute enough to eat?

My hair is the only part of me not covered in paint!
C-U-R-L-Y
For those who enjoy the chill of winter
Time for my curtain call~!
It is the chic, le yes~?
Just a hint of Pixie magic
My, the waves are tall today.
The flames may be hot, but my hair is hotter!

For a while after the initial release of these basic Silly Hair dolls, it seems as though there would not be anymore coming out due to a supposed lack of popularity in the line. But after a while, a special Lalaloopsy doll was release and advertised to be part of this line:

A song in my heart and a style for all occasions!
Harmony B. Sharp, is one of the special Lalaloopsy that came out in 2012, and the only special doll released for the Silly Hair line. Although as you can see in the picture, only two of her hair attachments actually fit the theme. While Harmony was popular as a character, her hefty price (fifty to seventy dollars) kept many from purchasing her. She is still out in stores though and the price has gone down since then.

Since then, a few more of the Silly Hair dolls have come out and even a brand new spin-off line of Silly Hair dolls have been released:

I believe this to be quite silly!

What? No gems to go with my hair?

Frozen hair, it's cool.
A serious case of bed head!
Once again productions of these dolls had come to a short end. Two more little silly hairs have been released, now including a gimmick of having three hair colors. Instead of just one. Observe:

I've heard of angel hair noodles, but I didn't think I would see it on a doll
It's Sprinkles Picasso!
And so, I shall now dive into my usual plans. I will show off features, provide information, and I will also give some ratings before ending it. So here we go!

Hearts and buttons and flowers oh my!

As I mentioned previously. Each Lalaloopsy Silly Hair doll comes with a coiling brush and five sets of hair clips. Each being unique to the girl. As you can see, Jewel's consists of pink hearts, pink flowers, and green buttons. Her brush is pink themed.

This is a full view shot of Silly Hair Jewel. The shoes (from what you can see) may look familiar to you. This is because they are really the same pair of shoes that a normal Jewel Sparkles doll wears!

Essentially the dolls are the same, but besides similar colorings and bodies. The true differences rely on their shoes and hairstyles.

As you can see, her new dress does have plenty of similarities to the previous dress worn by Jewel. However it also consists of many differences such as fact her skirt is essentially just own layer instead of three or four. It also lacks the ivy-green belt, buttons strip, and overall the skirt is a different shape. She also lacks her tiara due to the silly hair.

Hey, what are you doing? What's that camera for?!
There are many hair posing capabilities for the Silly Hair, but I've noticed that it can be really hard to get the style you want to stay as still as they make it look in pictures. The hair piece may shift a bit, or will not coil as tightly as you would like. I have tried to re-create one or two of the styles shown on the box art and found it hard to do. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get pictures.

Each doll comes with her normal pet. But each pet has it's own little gimmick, to fit with the doll. Such as you can see above, cat's tail is coiled. Some pets have their ears, wings, and even their noses as the focal coil piece. However, they do suffer from limited capabilities one can do with it.

Harmony B. Sharp's pet and the Lalaloopsy Littles do not have this function however. Harmony's instead words as a musical shaker, while the littles' silly hair gimmick works differently and their pets can clip onto their hair.

But for now, lets go over some reviews:

Fun

Although the only gimmick of the Silly Hair doll may be the fact that it's hair is coiled and made to be played with, there is actually a lot of fun things you can do with them! Not only do they make a fun addition to any Lalaloopsy collection, With five strands of coily plastic hair and about ten hair pieces, there are plenty of capabilities one could do with this doll. It more or less relies on your patience to try to get hairstyles you enjoy!

I have given it a five out of five buttons because I think the many capabilities possible are worth purchase. It's also good for stress relieving or time spending.

Health

Originally I didn't think this was important but I had decided to mention. This toy is not suitable for very young children that are not watched carefully. Because of so many little pieces it is possible one could choke on them.

Other then that, I don't really think there's any other harmful things to mention so I have rated this a four out of five.

In Conclusion

There wasn't exactly much to rate, was there? I apologize and if you can think of anything to ask me, I would gladly go back and review it or add it to my ratings here. Anyway, my next review could be anything. A brand new Lalaloopsy, my very first Kawaii Crush!

Only two more days to find out if I get anything related to this blog for my birthday. I probably will though, as I plan to make a trip to the toy store after opening my presents to check out a few things I have been informed of.

I also plan to make a very special Halloween based post to show off some Lalaloopsy cosplayers and costumes ON Halloween. Unless something would happen and I need to do it a day before or after. If you plan on doing anything or would like to see your picture on here, feel free to comment :3

  • 2 cups softened butter/margarine
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 2 eggs
  • 5 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar decorators glaze
  • 4 cups powdered sugar

  2. Heat oven to 375 F. Lightly grease cookie sheet and divide the dough in half. On lightly floured surface, roll each half 1/8 inch thick. Cut into desired shapes with 3-inch cookie cutters and place about 2 inches apart on cookie sheet.
  3. Bake 5 to 7 minutes or until edges turn light brown. Remove from cookie sheet to wire rack. Cool completely, which would be about 30 minutes.
  4. In a small bowl, beat all glaze ingredients except food colors on low speed until smooth. Divide among several small bowls, then stir in desired food color, one drop at a time, into each until the desired color. Decorate cookies with glaze and other decorations as desired.

Light 'n' Fluffy Meringues

  2. In a large bowl combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Mix well.
  3. Add in eggs, vanilla, milk, and shortening. Stir until all ingredients are incorporated.
  4. Spray donut pan lightly with cooking spray. Fill each cup with 3/4 of the way.
  5. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until donuts are cooked completely.
  6. Leave the donuts in the pan for a few minutes, then remove them and place on a cooling rack.
Glaze Directions

  3. Whisk in powdered sugar and stir until you have a creamy, smooth glaze. If it starts to cool too quickly, re-heat it for about 30 seconds.
  4. Dip each donut into the warm glaze, top with sprinkles and allow to sit for about 30 minutes.

And so the entry has come to a sweet, delicious end. If you have tried these recipes, or consider it then feel free to share your experiences or pics with the blog. I plan to try making the meringue cookies for myself to see how they turn out. I will make a separate entry and include some pictures on how it goes so stay tuned, favorite, comment, whatever you like ;3

Micro Lalaloopsy!

This will be a short review, given the fact these Lalaloopsy aren't very much to look at, nor do they function much of a purpose. But they are as cute as a new button and fun to collect!

Micro Lalaloopsy are quarter sized, miniature figurines that one can find in a surprise pack. Each doll comes with a matching sticker, a tiny heart sticker, and a poster that shows all of the micro's that belong to that specific series. On the back of the poster, one can use their stickers to mark which micro they own if they please.

Currently there are five series out, but as you will be able to see from my pictures that I only have series one through three. This is because where I live, they are not very popular. I only find them in SOME K-Marts for about two dollars, and last time I went (a couple months back) they didn't have any, yet the box was still there. I have a theory that I may have been the only person buying them since the box always looked exactly the same every time I came. I even bought the last three in the box the time before then...

These addictive little cuties may be hard to find, but they can be a real fun treat. They may not do much, but one thing people are encouraged to do can be kinda fun if you have a bunch...

Our bodies!

Something feels different...

That's right! Their heads pop right off and you can switch/swap them and the bodies around to create brand new micros. I assume if you wanted to you can also repaint/mod them, something I had wished to do and intentionally planned, but I lost a few of the doubles I had, so I never got to find out how good it works other then seeing a picture someone did of them:

Not mine

Anyway I will now go over each of the series to show you what the Micro world consists of up to this point. Each set comes with 12 brand new micros, with one being a mystery micro, and one being a blank micro.
Sorry for the glare, blame my camera

In this series, the dolls had three mold types: Bea Spells-a-lot, Spot Splatter Splash, or Crumbs Sugar Cookie.
  1. Crumbs Sugar Cookie
  2. Sheep/Lamb
  3. Bea Spells-a-lot
  4. Aluminum/Metal
  5. Purple
  6. Doodles/Paper
  7. Spot Splatter Splash
  8. Bird
  9. Yellow Blank
  10. Snowman
  11. Sprinkles/Cupcake
  12. Mystery (Gold/Yellow)
Curse you glare!

Series 2 kept the same mold shapes as previous, but with different characters.
  1. Pillow Featherbed
  2. Mittens Fluff 'N' Stuff
  3. Dot Starlight
  4. Owl
  5. Light Pink
  6. Orange
  7. Hot Cocoa
  8. Gingerbread
  9. Clown
  10. Paint Splatters
  11. Pale yellow blank
  12. Mystery (Polar Bear)

As Series 3 did, the mold shapes remained the same but the characters did not. This time, Peanut Big Top, Jewel Sparkles, and Tippy Tumblelina were chosen.

  1. Peanut Big Top
  2. Jewel Sparkles
  3. Tippy Tumblelina
  4. Cow
  5. Chick
  6. Pale Pink Blank
  7. Deep Pink
  8. Milk and Cookies
  9. Blue
  10. Scarecrow
  11. Night Sky
  12. Mystery (Jam)

While keeping three of the original molds, series 4 introduced two more: Patch Treasurechest and Marina Anchors

  1.  Berry Jarns 'N' Jam
  2. Mouse
  3. Traffic Cone/Teacher (?)
  4. Patch Skeleton Costume
  5. Marina Anchors
  6. Cat
  7. Neon Yellow Blank
  8. Sunny Side Up
  9. Yellow
  10. Pink
  11. Patch Treasurechest
  12. Mystery (pink with card symbols)

The most current series, 5 only introduced one new mold. This being Blossom Flowerpots.

  1. Blossom Flowerpot
  2. Misty Mysterious
  3. Swan
  4. Parrot
  5. Peppy Pom Poms
  6. Pepper Pots 'N' Pans
  7. Purple
  8. Orange
  9. Popcorn
  10. Polkadot
  11. Pale Blue Blank
  12. Mystery
And so, I shall now go into my pros, cons, rankings mode.

Pros
  • There's all sorts to find
  • Fun to collect
  • A fun little surprise for any Lalaloopsy fan
  • The creative ways they can be used

Cons
  • Because they come in mystery bags there isn't anyway to avoid getting repeats
  • They're easy to lose
  • They can be somewhat dangerous to young children
  • Little to no use

Versatility/Use

As I have demonstrated/said/shown, Micro Lalaloopsy have a mixed reaction when it comes to their uses. They can't really be played with since they're so tiny and have a singular moving part, but at the same time you can play with them and even swap their heads for fun. They can be customized by repainting or simply using them in a craft, where all you need is some creativity to help you out!

While some may only see them as a one-note pony, I think it's up to the owners themselves to decide how far they can truly take them.

I give them a five out of five because while some may only see them as a one-note pony, I think it's up to the owners themselves to decide how far they can truly take them.

Safety

As mentioned in the cons listing, I am concerned that they may be dangerous for young children, should they ever be given one. The heads of the micro are pretty big, but it wouldn't stop a child from trying to eat it. The bodies meanwhile, could also be ate, or even shoved into the ear or nose.

Now I'm not trying to scare anyone, but I do want people to realize they still have to pay attention to these things and feel it's important to warn them.

General Appeal

The Micro Lalaloopsy are a very required taste as far as I know. A lot of people comment on how much they adore them on the Lalaloopsy Land wiki I run, but I've heard countless times that on facebook a lot of people/parents are complaining about them.

Before I end the entry, I leave you with this. Another idea you can do with Micro Lalaloopsy:

Lalaloopsy "Jewel Sparkles"

Okay, so three (four?) days into the blog and I'm finally getting to the all too important reviews involving merchandise. I apologize now for not doing it sooner, but because I actually don't have anything "Kawaii Crush" just yet, I was hoping to get some stuff for that series done. As they are still new, there isn't very much to report yet anyway. So until I get something (birthday this month, or next month when I'm out somewhere) I won't have any Kawaii Crush Merchandise to review unfortunately. I know what you're all thinking, "who would be stupid enough to make a blog and not have anything that belongs to half of it?!" Well I warned you I wasn't very smart already, so don't bother pointing it out now.

So with one final explanation before I begin, think of this as not only a review for Jewel Sparkles, but a review for every single first time average Lalaloopsy Doll. So this would be quite the recommended review to read for first timers. However, when I do following Lalaloopsy reviews I won't be going through so much explanation unless for some reason it feels needed.

A Lalaloopsy (originally "Bitty Buttons") is a rag doll that comes to life when their last stitch is sewn. Each one has a special swatch of fabric that comes from an item or article of clothing, inspiring their personality and traits.

For example, Jewel Sparkles' fabric came from a Princesses dress. While this leaves her own heritage ambiguous, she has a very princess-based personality, being a mostly nice girl who loves to dance and collects tiaras. But she can be just a little bossy.

Besides an official personality and the item inspiring it, each Lalaloopsy is given an official birth-date, pet, and number. Humorously, their birth dates are printed on the tag each doll comes with, as well as their bottoms...

I couldn't get a closer picture due to how my camera is towards white things

While they are rag dolls, a Lalaloopsy is made out of plastic. While personally I feel indifferent, my mother often points out how strange this is when describing them to others, so I would assume some people like it and others do not. A Lalaloopsy has about five points of articulation/movement, this being their arms, legs, and head. However, while arms can be set into a pose, legs cannot and simply wiggle around, allowing them to sit and (barely) stand.

Their joints are very loose but may stiffen over time if sat in one position or not touched in so long. When that happens, a simple playing of the joint in question should loosen it very easily.

Also worth mentioning is that originally, Lalaloopsy were not meant to be played with around water unless specified otherwise. This is because plastic/rubbers/dolls tend to collect mold if not properly dried. This can ruin the doll and make it no longer safe to play with. However, newer dolls can be found with holes on the lower sides of their heads, near their necks so that if water was to get into the head, they had a little drain. As Jewel does not have this, I will take a picture of this at a later date.

A Lalaloopsy's face is very simple. It consists of button eyes, a stitch-style mouth, and stitched cheeks. Their hair is generally one big piece of styled plastic, sometimes with scrunchies molded on it, or with a separate piece such as a halo or crown.

Is my crown the right shade of pink?

Their outfits are made from basic clothing materials, while the shoes are usually made out of a thin rubbery plastic to allow the shoes to slip on and off. But the one thing that never seems to change is the fact a Lalaloopsy comes in a big obnoxious box.

While notorious for being quite hard to open, I find that by swiping an open pair of scissors over the taped tabs can work wonders and pull mostly all of the box apart. Then all you have to do is make a few safe snips to release the doll. However I wouldn't suggest doing this if you're clumsy with scissors or a child, as rarely I often find little scratches on my fingers or get snapped by plastic or a rubber band. It's rare, but I just would hate for others to get harmed following my advice without knowing the risks. Believe it or not though, there is a single advantage of this big obnoxious box. The fact that almost the entire thing is clear plastic!

Oh yes I know you're wondering, "what's the big deal with a clear window?" Well, this clear window is actually a money saver. Why is that? Because, with this clear box you're able to get a clean, good shot of almost every single aspect of the doll inside of it.

While Lalaloopsy are mostly clean and well painted, it does not mean they are perfect. Sometimes a doll may have a lot of glue residue around the head, or they may have something smeared on their face, or even some paint spots. Well, because of this clear and clean plastic (granted it isn't dirty from being touched or stained), you can look for any visible signs of something that may save you from purchasing a stained or dirty doll.

Recently to promote the cartoon series which began a few months ago and continues to air on Nick Jr, the main/original eight of the Lalaloopsy (including Jewel) have been re-released to be in a special television shaped box. Besides the lack of a poster and card/tag with the characters personal info, the box includes a speech box advertising the show, along with a few pictures of the character in their animated form. It is possible other character who make an appearance in the show may get updated boxes also.

I wanted to be ON television, not in one...

Here are some shots of the "items" one can find with a basic Lalaloopsy doll/Jewel Sparkles.

Her dress, which is composed of pink silk-like material with polka dots and two black buttons on the chest, an ivy green band around the waist to match the two layers under her skirt and the tulle ribbons decorating it. The lining of the dress is composed of very thin lace, while her skirt has four layers. The top, a pale pink layer with white polka dots, a tulle green one with sparkle spots, and a plain yellowish-green one beneath it.

Her tag/Card, listing her birth (sewn) date, what she was sewn from, and a few personal traits. Also note that every Lalaloopsy's tag is in their signature colors. Jewel's being pink and green.

This is her pet cat, who is addressed as Cat or Kitty. It's also been described as being a Persian, despite not looking like one. The most likely reason for this is probably because of how MGA likes to re-use their pet molds. Kitty is one of the most re-used in both large, and mini sized dolls. As she is included with almost every Jewel Sparkles doll, along with her mini. There is also a darker variant with Confetti Carnivale, and Candy Broomsticks, who has a black kitty.

Essentially each pet is just one piece of plastic with button eyes and cheeks like the owner. Unlike the owner however, the pets lack any movable pieces on them. Making them simple bunches of plastic. But they are as cute as a button, (as far as I know) durable, and they can be fun to pose with the doll or by themselves:

Moving on from pets now, one of the most beloved feature of any Lalaloopsy is the fact that they change outfits with ease. If you want to experiment, you can easily swap clothing/outfits with another Lalaloopsy doll or make your own. Each outfit usually has one long piece of Velcro on it, but sometimes they may have more then one. The sewing details are very nice but anything like tulle tends to snag very easily and can cause loose a few loose strings.

Jewel wearing Coral Sea Shells' bathing suit

Since their release, fashion packs have been coming out for Lalaloopsy. Usually consisting of just one dress and a pair of shoes, they fit all/any basic size Lalaloopsy and have all sorts of themes, ranging from party dresses to rain gear to skeleton themed pajamas. As mentioned above, it is very easy to change a Lalaloopsy's attire and they make for some fun photo's and play time:

Now, you may have noticed something awfully familiar regarding the shoes of the red party dress. If you didn't then take a look at this:

The pink shoe belongs to Jewel while the red shoe belongs to the red party dress. This was my next point I was going to bring up. The Lalaloopsy makers often-times "recolor". Which means you may find some Lalaloopsy with the same hair styles or shoes, but it will be a different color or have some sort of modification. While some mark this as a con to Lalaloopsy, I personally am not very bothered by it. In fact, most of my dolls do have the same hairstyle because not only do I love the characters themselves but I also really happen to enjoy the hairstyle.

Alright, so I think I have mentioned enough. Now I will go over some pros and cons, and give some ratings before I end the entry. Keep in mind that some of these I do not agree with however. I've gone around to gather these and see what others may think.

Pros
  • There's so many different characters that everyone should be able to find at least one they like.
  • You can repaint something if you do not like it or find a stain.
  • They can swap clothing.
  • They're big enough to keep track of pretty easily.
  • They can easily be customized into brand new characters.
  • There's so many products that even if you don't enjoy the basic doll, you may want to try another Lalaloopsy type.
  • (as far as I know) They're not very fragile so unless you purposely try to break the doll it should be fine.
Cons
  • Some items are recolored off one-another.
  • They are made out of plastic and may somewhat be uncomfortable to some.
  • They can take up a decent amount of space.
  • Not very pose-able.
  • They do not come with very much.
  • Although they can be customized, the most you can do with the hair is paint it another color.
Basically, Lalaloopsy are a required taste. They are very attractive to young girls, as well any gender or any age. Some people believe they may be creepy with their "Coraline button eyes", but I actually saw that as part of the appeal. So take that for what you will.

 RATINGS

1. Creativity

When it comes down it, Lalaloopsy are very creative. While rag dolls aren't necessarily new, I'm pretty sure rag dolls made of plastic are! Now, I would have given them a perfect rating. But I consider recolors to not be creative or original, even if they do not necessarily look bad.

2. Playability

Whether you choose to collect them or buy them for a gift, Lalaloopsy have many types of purposes and things you can do with them. Such as collect them, play with them, dress them up, sleep with them at bed time, take pictures with them, go on playdates with them, cuddle and hug them!

It is hard to do very much with the doll itself in terms of how it's body is made however. The arms can be posed, but to hold anything you would have to hold the arms together yourself. Their "top-heavy" bodies also make it hard for them to stand and they cannot physically do this without support. I gave them a four out of five buttons because while I think they are plenty good, they're a few buttons short of being perfect...

I will try to get another review done soon, as I have the pictures ready and stuff. I wanted to make sure I get one review of each type of doll done before I go into other blog topics, like foods, beauty products, books, and so on. I also accept guest reviews so if you would like to do one sometime just message me and we can work something out. But I do not accept stolen pictures so please get permission if you ever take my pictures or someone else's.
